MR. COLLINS: Well, it seemed that to me. I could not exactly state how long, but it seemed that to me. When I came to to the surface I saw this boat that had been taken off. I saw a man on it. They had been working on it taking it off of the saloon deck, and when the waves washed it of the deck they clung to that; then I made for it when I came to the surface and saw it, and I swam over to it.
SENATOR BOURNE: Did you have a life belt on?
MR. COLLINS: I had, sir. I was only about 4 or 5 yards off of it, and I swam over to it and I got on to it.
SENATOR BOURNE: How many were on the collapsible boat?
MR. COLLINS: Well, sir, I could not exactly say; but I am sure there was more than 15 or 16.
SENATOR BOURNE: Did those who were on help you get on?
MR. COLLINS: No, sir; they were all watching the ship. I had not much to do. All I had to do was to give a spring and I got onto it; and we were drifting about for two hours on the water.
SENATOR BOURNE: When you had the child in your arms and went to this collapsible boat that you understood was being launched, why did you not get into it?
MR. COLLINS: Sir, we had not time, sir, they had not got it of the deck until we were washed off the deck.
SENATOR BOURNE: After the ship struck did you see any lights over the water anywhere before any of your boats were lowered?
MR. COLLINS: No, sir.
SENATOR BOURNE: After the boats were lowered did you see any lights that you believed was a ship coming to your relief?
MR. COLLINS: Yes, sir; there was three boats lowered.
SENATOR BOURNE: I do not mean of your own boats, but I mean any lights away from your own boats or your own ship. Did you see any light in the distance?
MR. COLLINS: I had the child in my arms, and I looked back at her stern end and I saw a green light.
SENATOR BOURNE: What did you think it was, one of your own boats?
MR. COLLINS: No, sir; I did not really think of what it was until the firemen and sailors came up and said that it was a boat.
SENATOR BOURNE: That is, a ship?
MR. COLLINS: Yes,
SENATOR BOURNE: What became of it?

M. COLLINS : Eh bien, il me semblait que. Je ne pouvais pas dire exactement combien de temps, mais il me semblait que. Quand je suis arrivé à la surface j’ai vu ce canot qui avait été enlevé. J’ai vu un homme dessus. Ils avaient travaillé sur le pont des embarcations, et quand les vagues l’ont balayé du pont, ils se sont accrochés à lui; et j’ai fait la même chose quand je suis revenu à la surface et que je l’ai vu, et j’ai nagé vers lui.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Aviez-vous une ceinture de sauvetage?
M. COLLINS : Oui, monsieur. Je n’étais qu’à 4 ou 5 mètres de lui, et j’y suis allé à la nage et jj’y suis monté.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Combien y en avait-il sur le canot démontable?
M. COLLINS : Eh bien, monsieur, je ne pourrais pas vous le dire exactement, mais je suis sûr qu’il y en avait plus de 15 ou 16.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Est-ce que ceux qui étaient dessus vous ont aidés à monter?
M. COLLINS : Non, monsieur; ils surveillaient tous le navire. Je n’avais pas grand-chose à faire. Tout ce que j’avais à faire, c’était d’aller vite et monter dessus; et nous avons dérivé pendant deux heures sur l’eau.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Lorsque vous avez eu l’enfant dans les bras et que vous vous êtes rendu à ce canot démontable qui, d’après ce que vous avez compris, était mis à l’eau, pourquoi n’y êtes-vous pas entré?
M. COLLINS : Monsieur, nous n’avons pas eu le temps, monsieur, ils ne l’ont pas sorti du pont jusqu’à ce que nous soyons balayés du pont.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Après le heurt du navire, avez-vous vu des lumières au-dessus de l’eau avant qu’un de vos canots ne soit descendu?
M. COLLINS : Non, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Après que les canots ont été abaissés, avez-vous vu des lumières que vous pensiez être un navire venant à votre secours?
M. COLLINS : Oui, monsieur; trois canots ont été mis à l’eau.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Je ne parle pas de vos propres canots, mais des lumières qui se trouvaient à l’écart de vos propres canots ou de votre propre navire. Avez-vous vu de la lumière au loin ?
M. COLLINS : J’avais l’enfant dans les bras, et j’ai regardé son extrémité arrière et j’ai u un feu vert.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Qu’est-ce que vous pensiez que c’était, un de vos canots?
M. COLLINS : Non, monsieur; je n’ai pas vraiment pensé à ce que c’était jusqu’à ce que les chauffeurs et les marins viennent et disent que c’était un bateau.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : C’est-à-dire un navire?
M. COLLINS : Oui, monsieur.
